The Magic and Mystery of Arab Music, and the Elements That Define It, a demonstration and concert by the Simon Shaheen Trio, will be presented. This Event is Free for the entire community, presented by the Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase, funded by a grant from the Bluestein Family Foundation, administered by the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild.

The Magic and Mystery of Arab Music, and the Elements That Define It: Have you ever heard of a qanun? An oud? A riqq? In this presentation, the audience will have a unique opportunity to experience an entirely new way of learning about another culture through its musical language.

Simon Shaheen, world renowned Middle Eastern musician, composer and educator, along with his musicians, will unlock the doors to listening and understanding the complex and enthralling music of the Arab world. He will explain and demonstrate the use of “maqam” – the modes of music that Arabic music is played in, the “iqa” or rhythmic patterns, as well as the art of “Zakhrafa”, or the ornamentation that gives Arabic music its clearly recognized character.

You will hear some of this wonderful music played by world class musicians who come from the country the music is played in. Attendees will be treated to hands-on demonstrations of the instruments that create this music, how they are played, and why they are constructed the way they are. Be prepared to be transported around the world without having to buy a plane ticket! Suitable for all ages, admission is free.
